Rooms
The lodge features twenty-five luxurious Canadian safari tents lined along the banks of Clayoquot Sound or tucked within the cool reserves of the rainforest. These traditional white canvas retreats are styled with refined luxury, featuring specially commissioned furnishings from local designers, First Nations artwork, and cast iron heated stoves to keep the evening chill at bay.
dining
Dining at Clayoquot is a “real taste of the destination,” utilizing locally produced organic ingredients sourced from British Columbia and Vancouver Island. The culinary team incorporates traditional First Nations cooking methodologies and ancient foraging techniques to create a deep sense of place, served alongside craft beers and local coffee.
Experiences
Experiences at the lodge span the spectrum from high-adrenaline expeditions to restorative mindfulness. Guests can challenge themselves with river canyoning, rock climbing, or rugged hiking through the Ursus Valley, while those seeking a slower pace can join sunrise yoga flows and transformative “glacial plunges” in the Bedwell River. Every activity is led by expert guides who weave together education on the region’s biodiversity with stories of the Nuu-chah-nulth people’s heritage and the lodge’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship.

SUSTAINABILITY

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge operates with a deep reverence for its environment, guided by a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan and funded in part by a 3% Environmental Sustainability surcharge.

  • Ecosystem Restoration: Since 2001, the lodge has worked with the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the First Nations of Ahousaht to restore the Bedwell River Watershed and salmon spawning habitats.
  • Wildlife Support: Clayoquot supports the Redd Fish Restoration Society, which preserves native fish stocks on Vancouver Island.
  • Environmental Legacy Program: Sustainability initiatives are privately funded through a 3% environmental surcharge on guest bookings.

Active engagement with local communities is a core priority for the Beckons group.

  • Indigenous Partnership: The lodge is located in the territory of the Ahousaht and features artworks from the House of Himwitsa, which showcases native artists from Vancouver Island.
  • Spirit of Mateship: This bi-annual fundraiser auctions three-night stays to donate proceeds to local community organisations.
  • People: The lodge offers a First Nations’ Summer Internship program and prioritizes the long-term development and wellbeing of its close-knit staff family.

The culinary and retail experiences are deeply rooted in supporting British Columbia artisans.

  • Sourcing: Ingredients are sourced from the Tofino Ucluelet Culinary Guild, with proteins from the Cowichan Valley and coffee from Tofino Coffee Roasters.
  • Artisans: Tents feature furniture by Barter Design and wool cushions by Cloth Tone. The boutique stocks Indigenous-made bentwood boxes by Moy Sutherland and sustainable wearables by Anian.
  • Sustainable Amenities: Bath products are provided by Tofino Soap Company and Seaflora Skincare, which uses local Pacific seaweed

In 2024, the lodge revealed a CAD$4.2 million solar energy and battery microgrid system, the largest project of its kind on Vancouver Island.

  • Grid Independence: The system includes 1,512 solar panels and 255 battery modules, allowing the lodge to operate largely off-grid and significantly reduce its reliance on diesel generators.
  • Green Transport: A fleet of twenty e-bikes provides sustainable guest transfers around the property, reducing SUV usage.

The lodge emphasizes conservation and the use of natural, restorative water sources.

  • Hydration: Guests are provided with reusable water bottles to eliminate single-use waste.
  • Mindful Use: Staff provide daily housekeeping to refill amenity vessels as needed.
  • Restoration: Guests are encouraged to participate in glacial plunges and enjoy deep cedar hot tubs, celebrating the purity of local glacial-fed river water.

Advanced waste management practices ensure a minimal environmental footprint.

  • Composting: An all-steel BIOvator composter uses naturally occurring heat to transform organic waste into viable compost in just 30 days.
  • Kitchen Garden: This compost is used in the onsite greenhouse and garden to grow vegetables and herbs for guest meals.
  • Recycling: Materials are routinely processed at the local community recycling centre in Ucluelet.
  • Plastic Elimination: Single-use plastics are minimized, with a preference for glass, stainless steel, and biodegradable packaging.
