Healing the world through travel

Ownia Collection’s main goal is to make sustainable travel the norm and not the exception, we take best practices seriously.

Ownia Collection member hotels must adhere to a strict set of 12 sustainability pillars which we have established in compliance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

As proud members of the GSTC we are actively promoting sustainability as a common goal for travel and tourism.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SUSTAINABLE & REGENERATIVE TRAVEL

The World Tourism Organization defines sustainable travel as the “management of all resources in such a way that economic, social, and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity, and life support systems.”

Now let’s talk about regenerative travel! This concept refers to the act of leaving a place better than it was before you arrived. For a journey to be truly regenerative, it must contribute to the well-being of the land, animals and humans of that place. The regenerative travel experience isn’t just about lowering your carbon footprint or buying local, it is about actively improving the social or environmental conditions of the place you’re visiting.

WHY IT IS URGENT TO CHANGE THE WAY WE TRAVEL

Some shocking facts about tourism’s impact on the environment:

  • Every year the hotel industry produces around 1700 tons of waste this is the same as 16 Cloud Gate Sculptures (The Chicago Bean) of waste.
  • The tourism industry is responsible for 8% of the world’s carbon emissions.
  • 455 million liters of water get wasted per year = 182 Olympic size swimming pools
  • Annually, the tourism industry produces 18 billion tons of single-use plastic waste – it’s equivalent to 1854 Eiffel Towers of plastic waste.
  • Based on the Paris Agreement, the hotel industry must reduce its carbon emissions by 66% by 2030 and be a net zero industry by 2050 to positively impact climate change and reduce global warming.

It is essential to support sustainable travel. It is in our hands to heal our planet, take care of it, and give something back to it since Earth gives us so much!

We all love to explore every corner of the world, and when we travel we expect the destination to be clean, beautiful, healthy, and pristine. In order for you to keep enjoying these magical experiences, we need to change the way we travel. We need to support sustainable hotels that promote and enrich the local environment and the communities they are part of.

It’s all about balance and consciousness. Together, we can heal the world through travel!
