SUSTAINABILITY

Longitude 131° operates with a “tread lightly” philosophy, ensuring that the majesty of the desert remains pristine for generations to come.

The lodge was designed and constructed to minimize its impact on the site; the infrastructure can be completely disassembled and removed with minimal remediation. Environmental management plans steer all strategies to conserve the desert ecosystem, developed in consultation with the Central Land Council.

Longitude 131 fosters a deep connection with the Aṉangu Traditional Owners. Through a longstanding partnership with the Ernabella Arts center, the lodge sponsors professional education and hosts artists-in-residence programs, allowing for a rare cultural exchange between guests and local artists.
Longitude 131’s culinary team aligns daily menus with the Aboriginal seasons, prioritizing Australian suppliers. By incorporating traditional “bush tuckers” such as muntrie berries and Davidson plums, we reduce food miles while supporting Indigenous agricultural traditions.
To harness the desert sun, solar panels on the Dune House provide hot water for guest tents. The lodge also taps into the Yulara Tjintu Solar Project, a 1.8MW system that sets a benchmark for sustainable remote tourism operations.
Water preservation is a priority; Luxury Tents feature generous showers instead of baths to save resources. We utilize accredited high-efficiency bathroom fittings and encourage linen changes every third day, saving hundreds of thousands of litres of water annually.
Longitude 131 has virtually eliminated single-use plastics by providing refillable metal bottles for excursions and using biodegradable eco-straws. Guest amenities are presented in stylish, refillable ceramic vessels, and on-site recycling ensures that waste is separated and managed conscientiously.
