The lodge operates under a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan and sits on a site where only 1% of the 102-hectare land is developed, preserving the rest as a private wilderness corridor. A 20-meter wilderness buffer of 45,000 fire-retardant native succulents protects the property while providing a bio-diverse habitat for local wildlife.
Through the Spirit of Mateship fundraiser, the lodge supports the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Network. The lodge further invests in the local economy by commissioning South Australian artists like Janine Macintosh and employing local builders who intimately understand the KI landscape.
Our “produce-to-plate” philosophy minimizes food miles and celebrates regional identity. We are the largest customer for Kangaroo Island Community Education, sourcing barramundi and hydroponic herbs raised by local students as part of their aquaculture program.
A significant hybrid solar and battery system allows the lodge to run largely off-grid, reducing diesel consumption by over 50%. Modern architectural design, including double-glazed glass and passive solar orientation, has reduced overall energy use by 25%.
We are nearly self-sufficient with a storage capacity of 5.8 million liters of harvested rainwater. This is supplemented by a solar-powered reverse osmosis system for bore water, and guests are encouraged to reduce laundry frequency to save hundreds of thousands of liters annually.
Waste separation and recycling are standard operations, ensuring materials are returned to depots whenever feasible. We use biodegradable cleaning chemicals and provide “Back of House” tours to guests interested in seeing how our waste and energy systems protect the island’s delicate ecology.
